How to learn Arabic

Introduction

Arabic is one of the most beautiful languages in the world, and it is the third widely spoken language after English and French. The language has gained popularity because of the Islamic religion, which is spreading quickly across the world. Also, another factor which has led to the spread of the language is the fact that the Middle East countries are now becoming centers of business and commerce. Considering a country like Saudi, who’s Capital City, Dubai is one of the largest Commercial towns in the globe. The language used by the residents in the city is mostly Arabic.

You could have ever wondered how you could learn Arabic. Don’t worry; this article is going to guide you on how to learn Arabic easily in less than a year. Arabic is one of the easiest languages to learn. All you need is patience and dedication. I am a tutor from Morocco training people how to learn Arabic easily. Here are some of the simple steps which will help you to learn Arabic online.

1. Select the Dialect You Want:

First, and for most, you should understand that the Arabic language comes in different dialects. The Arabic dialect language spoken by Iraqis is different from that spoken by the Egyptians which are different from that spoken by Moroccans (learn more about our Moroccan dialect). So the first step is to know which type of dialect you want to learn. I advise my students to go for Modern Arabic because when you get to know how to speak Modern Arabic, you will be in a position to communicate with twenty-two Arabic countries in the world. It is an easy Language to understand, and it will take you less than a year to start talking modern Arabic. I have trained many non-Arabs on how to speak Arabic and most of them were competent and fluent by the end of one year.

2. Appreciate and Learn the Arabic Culture:

Every community has got its own culture, and it will be easier for you to understand the language of a certain community if you get to learn about their culture. Some people are saying that they would like to speak Arabic, but they hate the Arabic culture. This is a bad mentality which you should get it out of your mind. Since I started training people online on how to speak Arabic, I have always used the approach of emphasizing them to learn and appreciate the Arabic culture. The culture has a close link to the language and it will help you in building your language. The Arab culture is more similar to the Muslim community, so it will be better if you intermingle with Muslims and get to know their practices and norms.

3. Learn the Greetings First:

Moroccan Arabic

Salutation is the first and easiest thing to learn in any language as it will help you to introduce yourself and still help you create a rapport with the one you are talking to. I always start teaching my students the Arabic salutations before anything else and the greetings entail the common Islamic salutations ‘’As-Salam Aleikum’’ whose meaning is ‘’ Peace Be upon You’’. They are common greetings which are not new to the ears of many and the response to the greetings is ‘’Waalaykum Salaam’’. They are very simple words which you hear them mostly in movies and documentaries covering events in the Arab countries.

4. Learn the Arabic Alphabets:

The alphabets are easy and simple to learn. There are twenty-eight alphabets in the Arabic language as opposed to the English alphabets. The pronunciation of the alphabets is a bit unique though there are some which have similar productions to the English alphabets. I’m teaching my students how to read and write the Arabic alphabets online through a teaching platform called Italki and with the aid of my YouTube tutorial videos. The unique thing about the Arabic language which you will discover during your training is the way of writing. The Arabic language is one of the languages in the world with the best calligraphy whose writings are starting from the right going to the left. When writing the alphabets, you start from the right side going to the left. The first letter is ‘’Alif’ ’which denotes the calligraphy-like that of number one- and the last letter is ‘’Yaa’’ which denotes the calligraphy- ي. 5. Learn Names of Common Objects:

The next thing to learn after you have learned how to write and read the twenty alphabets is to learn some names of the common things. Some of the common things you should know their names include chair, book, pen, car, chalk, blackboard, among many others. It was easy for my student to learn the names of the various objects as I used to teach them in groups. For example, when I start teaching my students the names of various objects, I always start by teaching them the names of things found in the classroom then later things found at home, things found at school and the general things around us. Gradually, the vocabulary of the student is increasing day by day and that’s why I advise the students to learn at least names of five things in a day. By the end of a month, they will have learned 150 names.

6. Learn How to Write Single Words:

The next step is to learn how to write single words using the twenty-eight letters. When introducing my students to reading and writing, I start by training them how to write two lettered words like ‘’ فم’’ which means mouth. Gradually, they get to learn some new words which have two letters as well and learn how to write them with their pronunciation. Later, I train them how to write three-letter words, then four-letter words and later five lettered words.

7. Learn the Pronouns:

The Arabic language has thirteen pronouns, which you ought to know them as you cannot communicate without putting them into consideration. You should understand that there are twelve pronouns in the Arabic language which are divided into two: Male pronouns and the female pronouns. Unlike the English pronouns where we have the singular pronouns and the plural pronouns. Arabic pronouns are classified into three: there are singular pronouns, pronouns referring to two people and the plural pronouns. I train my students how to write and use the pronouns in simple sentences which is the next step.

8. Learn How To Construct Simple Sentences:

You should then learn how to construct simple sentences and mainly the sentences which you will use to introduce yourself. I teach my students how to join words using the pronouns and coming up with meaningful, simple sentences. At this juncture, the students become able to greet someone and give a brief introduction of him or herself. You should then practice regularly on how to speak Arabic with some other people who know how to speak the language and this will help you improve. That is the basic steps on how to learn Arabic online in a fast and easy way.

Challenges Facing Many Students While Learning Arabic :

From my tutoring experience, I have observed the following challenges in most of the students:

  • Difficulty in writing: Since many people are used to writing from left to right, they find it challenging writing form the right but as time goes by they get used to.
  • Difficulty in pronunciation: There are some letters which are difficult to pronounce as they come from the throat. An example is ‘’kha’’ “خ”
  • Lack of patience: You need to be patient as earning a new language is not a one day lesson.

Conclusion

Learning a foreign language is hectic if you will live in a place where you cannot find anyone tailing that language and get to communicate with. Because one of the best ways to learn a language is by frequent talking and communication. In the cause of communication, you get to learn new words and you get to identify your errors and rectify them.
